Medbury Boys Giving Back

Charity and the spirit of giving have been elevated to a new level in the past few years, following natural disasters, war in Iraq, and terrorist attacks around the globe. After witnessing the horrific images of pain and suffering streaming steadily across their TV sets, more people than ever before have dipped deeper into their own pockets to offer needed relief to the survivors of unprecedented tragedies.  "Happier people give more and giving makes people happier, such that happiness and giving may operate in a positive feedback loop."

At Medbury the boys are encouraged to give back to their communities on a number of levels and we are proud that their efforts have enabled us to donate both money and goods to a number of local and national charities, plus send goods to areas where national disasters have occurred.

  • At least once a term the boys have a themed Mufti Day, with all donations given to charity.  Each of the four houses; Clyde, Creyke, Hamilton and Ilam, have chosen different charities for their donations. In recent years these have been charities such as The Kids Foundation, RSPCA Canterbury, KidsCan Charitable Tust, Cholmondeley Childrens Centre Inc, Canterbusy West Coast Air Rescue Trust, The Starship Foundation, Cancer Society of NZ, Canterbury Charitable Hospital Trust and more.
  • Church offertories are split between the St Barnabas Fendalton Trust, the Christchurch City Mission, the Transitional Cathedral, Christchurch, the Christchurch RSA Trust and the SPCA Canterbury Inc.
  • A shipping container full of items donated by the Medbury community was sent to Fiji following the devasting  Cyclone on 20 February 2016.
  • A group of boys and staff take part in the World Vision 40-Hour Famine each year.  In 2017 they raised $22,818.10 during the 'Stroll for Syria' event, which was the second largest collective amount raised in the country.
