Yesterday our Years 1 to 4 boys showed their parents what they had been learning in Music this term.

There was fierce competition between Creyke, Hamilton, Clyde and Ilam Houses for the George Abbott Cup at the 2024 Swimming Sports on Tuesday 27 February.

The swimming finals for Years 3 to 8 were held in groups across the day with cheers and encouragement from the boys.

Thank you to all the family members who were out in force to support the boys, and to Mr Gilbert and all the officials who kept the day running smoothly.

Traditional Christmas readings and choral music combined to create the magic and beauty of Christmas in song for the Medbury family at the Senior Carol Service held at the Christ Church Transitional Cathedral on Wednesday.

This followed the Middle School Carol Service which was held the week before, where Christmas favourites were enjoyed by all.

The Medbury boys captured the imagination of the audience, young and old, as they retold the Charles Dickens classic 'A Christmas Carol' at the Junior and Lower Middle Christmas Play on Wednesday, 29 November.

Thank you to all the Grandparents and Special Friends who came to visit last Wednesday.

As you can see from the photos, the boys were eager to share their learning with their guests and show them around Medbury School.

Morning tea was served by the Medbury Parents’ Association, followed by a concert in The Medbury Centre which showcased the wide-ranging talents and hard work of our boys from our ‘Madbury Bears’ Theatresports Groups to our choirs, Kapa Haka boys, soloists, instrumentalists, Hip Hop crew and more!

On the weekend, the following Future Problem Solving teams travelled to Auckland for the Future Problem Solving National Finals.

Year 6: Hafez Safa, Kiran Keswani, Fletcher McNeill, Alexander Dy

Year 7: Freddy Rolleston, Hanson Xu, Theo Lutton, Ryan Collins

The weekend included competitions in Global Issues Problem Solving (applying the Future Problem Solving process to future issues) and the Presentation of Action Plan (a short skit in which teams act out their best solution).

The Year 6 team came 2nd in their year level for the main competition - Global Issues Problem Solving - and also claimed 2nd place for their 'Presentation of Action Plan'.

All of the boys represented themselves and their school admirably.

First Place in 'Helper Bot', an online Robocup Competition.

Magical performances thrill the audience!

Audiences at both shows commented on the high quality of the performances from the boys, and the seamless running of the event, thanks to the teachers and staff.

Thank you to the winners of the Senior Music Competition for their encore performances across all the musical categories.

Congratulations to Clare Erasmus, Year 3 Teacher at Medbury, who has been selected as a recipient of a 2023 ISNZ Honours Award for service to Teaching and Learning.

The award was presented by Hon Jan Tinetti, the Minister of Education in Auckland today.

The Awards were established by ISNZ to honour exceptional staff who demonstrate talent, service and commitment that is truly above and beyond.

At the Canterbury Primary and Intermediate Ski Race Day on 27 August at Mt Cheeseman Jack McMillan placed 2nd in the Years 5 and 6 category and Freddy Gorman placed 1st in the Years 7 and 8 category. The Years 7 and 8 team placed 3rd overall in the Intermediate section. At the ISSA Ski Race Championships on 22 August at Porter Heights the Medbury Red team (Ollie Brown, Thomas Nustrini Patterson, Freddy Gorman and Oscar Abbott) were placed first in the boys’ Years 7/8 Boys category and Oscar Abbott was the fastest boy overall. The Year 5/6 team (Ted Jones, Archie Matheson, George Unwin and Jack McMillan) also won first place. Ted Jones won first place (fastest boy) in this section

Double Gold at Robocup Nationals!

Team Sonic (Kiran Keswani) gained first place in the Junior Rescue and Team Avocado (Nitin Keswani and Daniel Zhang) gained first place in the Senior Rescue at the National Championships in Auckland last weekend.

Well done to both teams for winning their divisions, with Team Avocados gaining 152/152 points and Team Sonic gaining 148/148 points! Thank you to the Robocup coach, Mrs Robertson and well done boys on a wonderful ending to all your hard work this year.

Gold and Bronze at the Individual Chess Champs!

Well done to Vivaan Puri who place 1st Year 7 and Will Fang who placed 3rd in Year 6 at the Championships at Te Hāpua, Halswell, on Tuesday this week.

Well done to all the other boys attending, most of whom placed in the Top 20, and thank you to our Chess Tutor Mr Steven Hartwell.

Over the past weekend, three representatives from our Medbury Cycling Team competed in the 2023 Skoda Southern Tour. This event was held in Blenheim.

Day Boys v Boarders Centenary Year Rugby Match!

The mighty Boarders retained the Forbes Family Cup for the third year in a row in a thrilling last-minute victory with a final score of 31-28.

Well done to both the teams for the excellent sportsmanship on display throughout this annual event and thank you to the large crowd supporting from the sidelines!

Off to the Robocup Nationals!

Well done to our three Medbury teams consisting of Daniel Zhang, Nitin Keswani, Kiran Keswani, Austin Peng, Timmy Shen, Andrew Yang and Matthew Li who competed in the Robocup Regional Finals on Sunday held by Robotics Education New Zealand (RENZ) at Tūranga.

It was a great opportunity for the boys to demonstrate their coding and engineering design skills and knowledge in a competitive setting.

Our senior team (Daniel Zhang and Nitin Keswani) won the Senior Rescue category, and will be representing Medbury at the Nationals in Auckland on 26 August.

Parents, caregivers and grandparents enjoyed watching the Years 1 to 4 boys showcase their skills in choreographed dance at a Dance Curriculum concert last Friday.

Over the last two weeks the boys have been learning hip hop, a partner dance and more.

The Medbury Parents’ Association were thrilled to welcome Tim Watson as guest speaker at their ‘Breakfast with the Boys’ August event.

Tim is Head of Armour Development at Chiron Global and has 30 years' experience in engineering and prototyping. His current position at Chiron aims to offer the military advanced training and field hardware, and reignite weapons based traditional martial arts with the introduction of highly protective, smart body armour. Tim is involved in ground-breaking military hardware, and has enabled an exciting visionary sport, Unified Weapons Master (UWM).

The interactive talk was fascinating and the breakfast was a great success. Thank you Tim!

A combined evening concert for parents and friends in The Medbury Centre last night was the culmination of workshops held together during the day for the Selwyn House Orchestra, Jazz Band and Senior Chamber Choir and the Medbury School Choristers, Jazz Band and Orchestra.

The Time Travellers steal back the formula and decide to use the TARDIS to help them with their school ‘Decades’ project. By mistake, they overshoot and land in 1022 to find that the Medbury grounds are like a swamp. They encounter numerous native creatures. The Time Travellers try to make their way back to 2023 passing each decade from 1920 as they go, including WWII, Elvis Presley, Y2K and the rise of the internet and social media.

This show will appeal to all ages and will demonstrate what a group of nearly 500 humans can achieve when we cooperate and collaborate.

The Medbury School Cross Country was held on a rather chilly Autumn morning this week at Fendalton Park. Well done to every boy in the School, from Year 1 to Year 8, who gave it their best effort. The Centenary Art Auction on Friday night was a great success and featured emerging and well-known artists across a range of media.

Thank you to auctioneer Connor Kitto, those in our community who made the generous donations of art to the auction and our Sponsors The Oxford Group, Two Rivers, Southern Alps Brewing Co and Hey Hey. Also Adam Chennells who kindly supplied the never seen before video footage of Medbury in the 1920s which our old boys greatly enjoyed watching. This will be played at other Centenary events this year.

Seaweek 2023 celebrates our connection with the sea | Toi Moana ~ Toi Tangata. Our lives are often intertwined with the health and well-being of our ocean environments.

Our Centenary celebrations continue for 2023 and we have been focusing on sport for the month of March.

Thank you to the Old Boys and past and present parents who joined us on Wednesday to cheer on our talented Medbury 1st XI boys on the pitch in a game against our oldest exchange partners, Waihi School.

The game was followed by an after-match function outside the Stephen Scott Cricket Pavilion where Old Boys remembered past exchanges and the memories and friendships made during their time at Medbury.

The first in a series of annual summer sports exchanges was played at home today with the 1st XI Cricket team and the Top 8 Tennis team out in full force.

Although there was some rain this morning, leading to a delayed start at 10.30am, the sun came out and temperatures rose to a balmy 28 degrees by the conclusion of the matches.

The Junior School Christmas Concert was held on Tuesday 29 November to a packed audience of family members and supporters.

Last Wednesday we celebrated one of Medbury's most loved days on the annual calendar - Grandparents and Special Friends' Day!

As you can see from the photos, the boys just love sharing their learning with their guests and showing them around their School.

Morning tea was followed by a concert in The Medbury Centre showcasing our talented Medbury boys. We can't wait to do it all again in 2023 - our special Centenary year!

The Annual Twilight Athletics were held on Friday 4 November and saw the Medbury community out in force with their picnic baskets.

Medbury School hosted St Kentigern's on their South Island Tour this week.

The boys have been eagerly awaiting the matches, and enjoyed games rich in skill, passion and sportsmanship, together with comradery and friendship.

The Boarders retained the Forbes Family Cup in a thrilling game at the annual Boarders vs Day Boys Rugby match on Friday 2 September.

Well done to both the teams for the excellent sportsmanship on display throughout this annual event and thank you to the large crowd supporting from the sidelines!

Parents, caregivers and grandparents enjoyed watching the Years 1 to 4 boys showcase their skills in choreographed dance at a Dance Curriculum concert on Friday.

Over the last two weeks the boys have been learning hip hop, a partner dance and a disco dance.

Congratulations to Scott Johnson, Assistant Principal and Head of Curriculum at Medbury, who has been selected as a recipient of a 2022 ISNZ Honours Award for service to Educational Leadership and Innovation.

The award was presented by Minister of Education Chris Hipkins in Wellington on Friday. Scott’s leadership of P4C (Philosophy for Children), FPS (Future Problem Solving), and ACE (Medbury’s Acceleration and Enrichment) has been nothing short of extraordinary.

The Awards were established by ISNZ to honour exceptional staff who demonstrate talent, service and commitment that is truly above and beyond.

The Christchurch Schools Cycling TTT 15 Km Trial was held on 17 August starting at the Tai Tapu Hotel then heading back with a 7.5km turn around.

The Medbury Team were competing in the U14 Boys section and managed first, second and third placings.

Medbury A; Riley Crampton, Louis Hiatt, Harrison Tapper, George Clark (1st 25:58.21).
Medbury B: Louis Sharr, Noah Madgwick, George Hegan, Thomas Mortlock (2nd 29:24.00).
Medbury C: Tom Wilson, Arthur Brown, George Bishop, Cooper Godfrey (3rd 30:51.78).
Medbury D: Matt Bennett, Oscar Abbott, Sam Ensor (5th 34:08.50).

First place means that Medbury School continues to retain The Searle Cup for this special 15km team event. Our team are a credit to our school, they rode well and showed character and these are very pleasing results.

The Medbury Parents’ Association 2022 ‘Breakfast with the Boys’ was a great success this morning and we were thrilled to have Wheel Blacks Cody Everson as our speaker.

Cody captained the Wheel Blacks when they earned a qualification slot for New Zealand for the Paralympics, and we thank him for his inspirational talk.

This annual ‘sell-out’ highlight on our calendar once again ran seamlessly thanks to our truly awesome team of MPA volunteers!

The conditions were atrocious at the South Island Road Championships on Saturday 9 July, however the team still came up with an excellent collection of Gold, Silver and Bronze - well done boys to all the boys who participated!

It was great to see at least half a dozen Medbury Old Boys on the podiums also. Thank you to Hayden Godfrey for acting as Manager for this event.

The Year 8 Production, SPARK, and the interpretation of four fire myths, was a fascinating showcase of creativity, choreography, musicianship, drama and acting. The Year 8 boys were superb on the stage!

Winter Sports Exchange

After a sharp start to the morning with a good Canterbury frost, the fields thawed for a perfect afternoon of sport. All games were played in fantastic spirt.

In rugby, Medbury managed to secure a win, showing some exciting ball skills. Medbury won the hockey, scoring four wonderful goals. In the football, Medbury 1st XI drew 3 all with St Andrew’s in a classic encounter and Medbury 13 Blue managed to score in the last minute of the game to win 4-3 in a thriller on Ilam Fields. At St Andrew’s, the Medbury 12 Red football team came back from 2-5 down to draw 5-5. A brilliant effort not to give up and come back.

We look forward to seeing how our Medbury 12 Red Football and Medbury 1st V Basketball teams go on Monday for the last two games of the exchange.

We thank St Andrew’s for playing in great spirit and appreciate the support from the boys on the sidelines.

The Christchurch Symphony Orchestra has announced that this year’s recipient of the Slater Three-Quarter Violin is Medbury School student, Andy Li!

Andy Li was selected to take part in the CSO Ambassador programme this year and he was chosen as a student with huge potential and talent in his playing. We are so thrilled to hear this news. If you see Andy next term, give him the thumbs up!

Canterbury Qualifiers vs Otago Qualifiers

Medbury School played Taieri College from Dunedin yesterday in Timaru. This was the unofficial South Island Final as the CJCA National Primary Schools final was cancelled due to Covid.

The idea was to play 30 overs, but with the rain in the morning, we reduced this to 25. Taieri lost the toss and we sent them in to bat. Not long after the match had started, we had to have a short break to try and find another set of stumps as Henry Murfitt snapped one in half when he bowled someone out.

Taieri made 93 from their 25 overs and we managed to chase this down in the 14th over.

A message from our Head Boy, Henry Murfitt:

Hello boys and families.

It’s been four days since we got told that we were going into lockdown. I hope you are all enjoying lockdown even if it’s hard at times as we are out of our daily school routine and we don’t get to see our friends.

Thank you to the staff, boys and families for adjusting in a couple of hours to the news as fast as we could. I felt really sorry for my Years 7 and 8 peers and teachers who were enjoying the North Island sports tour before it was cancelled.

I’d like to thank all of the teachers for getting work for us as soon as possible, without you this would’ve been a lot harder.

This is the second time we’ve been in lockdown so hopefully this time won’t be as hard as we know what to expect. Please be kind to your siblings and family because they're going through this as well.

Over the next couple of days please all get outside and do some exercise each day. I have been going on walks with my family every day and practising football. Try to find something active you can work on. I can’t wait to see you all soon.

It was a great opportunity for the boys to demonstrate their coding and engineering design skills and knowledge in a competitive setting.

Promoting positive body image in boys

We invite parents to learn about how behaviour and language can contribute to shape and weight concerns – along with unhealthy eating – among boys.

Hosted by the Christ’s College and Medbury School wellbeing teams, registered nurse and therapist Anna Comins and senior clinical psychologist Jo Vallance will detail healthy beliefs and behaviour to boost confidence and wellbeing among boys.

Working in private practice at the Psychology Hub in Riccarton, both Anna and Jo support young people who have body image concerns, eating disorders and associated problems.

Yesterday saw the following boys taking part in the Canterbury Regional Chess Champs at the Christchurch Town Hall. Finlay Benson, Ryan Zhang, Bill Li and Tate Aikawa (A Team); Zac Croft, Josh Manenge, Cody Wu and Hwijun Kwon (B Team); and Lucas Hu, Noah Kingston, Tom Wilson and Morgan Du (C Team).

We were excited to receive updates from Chess Coach, Mr Benson, during the day yesterday, who first reported that the A team were first equal with one round to be played! Not long afterwards we found out that Medbury had made it through to the Chess Nationals! A first for Medbury! Well done to all the boys who played, and thank you to Coach Mr Benson, and Teacher in Charge of Chess, Mrs Johnson.

‘Breakfast with the Boys’ hosted by the Medbury Parents’ Association this year set new records with tickets selling out in less than two hours! The highly anticipated annual breakfast was a massive success and this year we were thrilled to welcome Black Cap and proud Cantabrian, Todd Astle, as guest speaker. We heard about his numerous challenges, triumphs and setbacks, both on and off the field. Todd spoke about how he has harnessed his experiences and learnings with an aim to inspire and empower others to maximise their potential with his peak performance mental skills business 'Innerspin'. Todd was joined by Medbury Dad and Canterbury Cricket's High Performance Manager, Marty Croy, who led the Q & A session at the end of Todd's presentation. This week we held our Mathematics and Literacy Open Morning and Parent Information Session. Our aim was to showcase the progression of our Mathematics and Literacy programmes throughout the School. It was a great opportunity for current parents to see some of the high quality learning programmes that happen every day at Medbury and how these develop and challenge the boys across the year levels. Throughout the School, classrooms were open for parents to observe lessons. Head of Numeracy, Anna Oborne, and Head of Literacy, Sarah Madgwick, presented to parents how these curriculum areas are taught and align with the New Zealand Curriculum, how they are assessed, how feedback is provided to boys and parents, and practical ideas for how parents can support their boys’ learning at home. Year 6 boys and their parents responded to the Bridge Construction challenge at their Science and Technology Evening last week. Length, height and distance between supports were all taken into consideration when judging the wide range of final constructions. Last week the Gardening Club harvested their potatoes and on Sunday, the Years 1 to 4 students gathered for our annual Harvest Festival Service. The Swimming Finals for Years 5 to 8 were held on Tuesday 2 March. Although spectators were not permitted at the venue due to Alert Level 2 restrictions, the boys supported each other admirably. We are looking forward to the ISSA Swimming meet next week, and bringing you the results and more photos in the next ‘Play the Game’ magazine. The Medbury community enjoyed hosting a summer sports exchange yesterday. Perfect weather aside, the boys responded well to end the day with a 3-nil record. The games were played in good spirit and the StAC visitors were highly complementary of our boys manners and sportsmanship.

Last night we celebrated one of the highlights of the Medbury year, the Senior Carol Service. Traditional readings and choral music combined to create the magic and beauty of Christmas in song for the Medbury Family. TOP AWARD – 2020 CHRISTCHURCH SCHOOLS’ MUSIC VIRTUAL EVENT

Congratulations to Mrs Chapman and the combined Medbury Choristers and Medbury Chorus for winning the top award in the choral section of the 2020 Christchurch Schools’ Music Virtual Event ‘The Choir performance I enjoyed the most'.

The judge wrote: “what beautiful solos to begin with, lovely tones, excellent diction and tremendous courage! A lot of care had obviously gone into this performance, including the nice framing of the choir against the lake backdrop, and deft touches from string bass and kit drum. The performance was beautifully shaped from these opening soloists into climactic passages of considerable power. This is a choir that knows how to harmonise as well as hold individual parts in a complex texture. Bravo on such a polished and musical presentation.”

ROCKSHOP BANDQUEST WINNERS!

Congratulations to our Year 8 Rock Band 'The Creyke Road Crew' who won the Canterbury Region’s Rockshop Bandquest last night. Mrs Badger, Medbury's Director of Music, said "they were totally rocking it, not only with a great funk sound, but exquisite in their musicianship as well - go boys!" We are proud of James, Matthew, Harry, Kennedy and Thomas for their fantastic achievement and thank their tutor Mr Stockwell for his tremendous input.

The Annual Twilight Athletics is enjoyed by our whole community, as evidenced by the line up for the family member races. The grass was green, the sky was blue and families were out in force with their picnic baskets. Cheering flooded The Medbury Green as the boys were jubilant in success and gracious in defeat. An outstanding effort all round!

Parents rocked it out at the dance concert today! We were delighted that so many parents and caregivers could join us for the ‘Dances for School’ concert, which showcased the learning of the Years 1 to 4 boys over the past fortnight. #playthegame #100yearsin2023

It was another sell-out Medbury Parents’ Association event for the annual ‘Breakfast with the Boys’ this morning. Mountaineer, double amputee, researcher, Paralympian silver medal cyclist, wine maker and unstoppable personality Mark Inglis met renowned Britten motor bike engineer, entrepreneurial spirit and Medbury parent Wayne Alexander in 1997. The combination of these two determined minds and a flippant comment way back then resulted in a true engineering feat. Pooling their talents saw them ascend Mount Everest together – the tallest mountain in the world. Thank you to Mark and Wayne for their inspiring presentation, and to the amazing MPA for another outstanding event!

Thank you to Medbury Old Boy Paul Lawrence (1962 to 1965) who visited yesterday with with an item of memorabilia to donate to the School. Paul’s father John Lawrence was a Medbury Old Boy, Prefect and Boarder (1926 to 1933). John Lawrence was Captain of the First X1 Cricket team, and Paul has donated a framed photo of John and his First XI Cricket cap to the School. The Lawrence Brothers’ Cup, which is awarded at each Summer Sports Prize Giving, was donated by Paul’s grandfather, J. W. K. Lawrence in 1932 in honour of J.H. Lawrence and his brother A.G. Lawrence.

Thank you to St Margaret's College for hosting the Top Team Challenge yesterday. A big thank you to SMC students Charlotte and Victoria for instigating this event which promoted problem-solving, communication and teamwork all while being active and having fun. An even bigger thank you from the boys for the sausage sizzle at the end!

Congratulations to all of the boys in our five teams who took part in the 15km Canterbury Schools' Team Time Trial (Boys Under 14) on Wednesday. We came away with Gold and Bronze medals and were awarded the Kevin Searle Cup. More photos and story to follow in 'Play the Game' magazine.

The Day boys have taken back the Forbes Family Cup from the Boarders in a thrilling match with a final score of 46-32. Well done to both the teams for the excellent sportsmanship on display throughout this annual event. Canterbury turned on some fantastic weather for the Sports Exchange with Huntley School this week. The students from Medbury and Huntley gave it their all in three extremely close matches. Medbury managed a win in the hockey and football matches, and lost by a penalty right on full time in the rugby. Well done boys! Thank you to the families of Medbury students who opened their homes to host the Huntley boys and girls.

The 2020 Year 8 Production ‘Imagine’ was made up of four plays, each of which had a central character with a vivid imagination. The sun came out for the Medbury School Cross Country at Fendalton Park today. Well done to the boys from Year 1 all the way through to Year 8 who gave it their best effort, and thank you to the friends and family who came out to cheer the boys on!

Inspired by the hugely popular ‘Breakfast with the Boys’ the Medbury Parents’ Association is excited to bring you ‘The MPA Speaker Series’. An online, webinar-based soundbite of inspiration and motivation for our boys, parents and caregivers alike, delivered by a range of passionate experts in their field.

While we don’t know with certainty whether ‘Breakfast with the Boys’ will be possible this year we do know it won’t be in the immediate future. With a strong awareness of the success that time spent with your boys to be inspired and motivated provides, we have embraced technology and are ready to deliver a user friendly, time efficient, fun and educational forum.

Our guest will speak for approximately 20 minutes followed by a 10 to 15 minute Q&A from the boys all facilitated by our host John Ogston. The platform allows boys to message in questions which can be upvoted by others to ensure they get answered as a priority.

We are also aware that as this is the inaugural event there may be opportunities for improvement. We will therefore enable your feedback afterwards.

Hello boys and the Medbury family.

It has been a week now since school was closed because of Covid-19. I hope everyone is doing well and adjusting to the lockdown as best you can.

Thank you to our teachers for sending through the online school work. It is a different way of learning with new challenges for us all.

An event like this has never happened before so we all need to work together. Boys, remember to be kind and helpful to your family. If you can, keep in touch with friends and family who might be alone.

Let’s keep active by doing some exercise in our neighbourhoods every day and I look forward to seeing you all at school soon.

The Medbury Parents’ Association Golf Tournament was a great success last week with sixty players enjoying a stunning evening. Congratulations to Cup winners Lochie Horne and Abraham Wilson (1st Place Gross) and Ollie and Daryl Young (Winner 1st Place Net). Sadly no one won the $30,000 hole in prize although Ben Wilkinson got pretty close! We have been making the most of the summer months at Medbury School to kick start our Outdoor Education programme. In the first three weeks of term we have had Year 8 Surf Days, Year 8 Sailing Days, and Year 5 Camp at Living Springs in Governors Bay. Last Wednesday’s Grandparents’ Day was a very special Medbury event, with record numbers of grandparents and other special family members visiting classrooms, enjoying morning tea and marveling at the amazing singing, acting, dancing and musicianship of the boys during the special concert in The Medbury Centre.

We are very proud of our teams who travelled to the FPS National Finals in Auckland on the weekend. Our Year 8 team consisted of Nicholas Sharr, Oscar Compton-Moen, Harry Vaughan and Harrison Lehmann. Our Year 6 Team won their competition to become the National Champions. Congratulations to Paddy Newton, Liam Singer, Jackson Grace and Charlie de Costobadie - a tremendous achievement! Well done to all the boys on their hard work and thank you Mr Scott Johnson and Mr Amos Pilgrim for coaching the teams.

Thank you to all the parents and friends of Medbury who came and supported the boys during the Twilight Athletics yesterday. Fun was definitely the order of the day! The official opening of The Medbury School Foundation Building was held on Monday, 21 October 2019. The welcome by Headmaster Ian Macpherson was followed with addresses by the Head Boy, Nicholas Sharr; the Chairman of the Medbury School Foundation, Mr George Forbes; and Vice-Chancellor | Tumu Whakarae of the University of Canterbury, Professor Cheryl de la Rey. Professor de la Rey then unveiled the plaque with the assistance of Year 1 student, Oliver Broadbent, and cut the ribbon. The new teaching block will ensure that Medbury’s facilities evolve with the requirements of a 21st century education.

Clyde House was the winner of the School House Music Cup at last night's 'Exploration' Music Extravaganza 2019. More photos, including House singing photos and photos of all the section winners of the Senior Music Competition, will follow in the Spring edition of 'Play the Game' magazine which will be released next week. Well done to all the boys on their excellent performances last night!

The Day boys managed to seal the annual Boarders v Day boys match on Friday 30 August with a convincing cross-kick right at the end. It was a thrilling game to watch! Well done to both teams for the excellent sportsmanship on display.

Congratulations to our Year 7 team (Jaewon Cha, Kennedy Xiao, Euan McVicar and James Floyd) who won the Cantamath Competition last night. An outstanding result with close to 100 schools competing. Gaining a solid third place was the Year 8 team (Nicholas Sharr, Jake Hayes, Oscar Compton-Moen and Harry Vaughan). Congratulations boys, this is an amazing achievement! Thank you to our specialist Mathematics teacher Mrs Jo Keleghan and all the staff involved who worked towards this spectacular result.

On Tuesday 6 August, Year 3 Teacher Mrs Clare Erasmus launched the fourth book in her 'Kia Kaha' series at The Medbury Centre. The message of the book is that people need to respect and value everyone and the places they come from.

At a Special Assembly and portrait unveiling this week, the School was able to acknowledge the significant contribution of former Headmaster, Mr Peter Kay and his wife, Mrs Helen Kay.

Congratulations to Kerri Fitzgerald and Lesley Bath who have each been selected as a recipient of a 2019 ISNZ Honours Award.

'A Midsummer Night's Dream' was a hit at today's matinee performance, with the boys looking forward to the evening performance tonight. A truly long list of individuals came together to make this production happen, and we thank each and every one for their contribution.

Yesterday we held our second International Exchange for 2019 with Anglican Church Grammar School (Churchie), who played Medbury in Basketball, Football and Rugby.
Thank you to our Medbury parents who have opened their homes and billeted players from TSS and Churchie. Your generosity is greatly appreciated and this social interaction between host boys and billets certainly adds to the Exchange experience.

Thank you to the Medbury community for showing your support for the Medbury Under 12 Basketball, Football and Rugby teams last week during the exchange with The Southport School (Queensland). We were proud to host the school and show our visitors first hand our wonderful Medbury community spirit. Our boys greatly enjoyed the games rich in skill, passion and sportsmanship, together with the comradery and friendships formed.

The highly anticipated annual 'Breakfast with the Boys' on 24 May was once again a huge success. Thank you to our guest speaker John Quinn for his inspirational message and to the Medbury Parents' Association for another outstanding 'sell-out' event.

On 21 May students from Medbury School and Selwyn House School came together for a combined Music Workshop. This was followed by a Concert for parents from both schools in the evening. Well done to all of the students involved for their collaboration and performances.

Medbury was a hive of activity on Saturday 18 May as the School hosted the Club Rugby Day, which saw games played on The Medbury Green and Fendalton Park. Thank you to all the parents, staff and boys who helped out at the BBQ station throughout the morning. Your generosity of spirit, especially on a cold morning, was greatly appreciated.

It was beautiful crisp Autumn morning for the Medbury School Cross Country at Fendalton Park on 14 May. Boys from Year 1 through to Year 8 participated and there was a large crowd of friends and family to support them. Well done boys!

The Medbury Service of Remembrance was held on 5 May 2019 at The Medbury Centre.

Throughout this week the boys have experienced a wide variety of The Arts including African drumming, dance roulette, Neil Shaskey drawing classes, sand sculptures, Shona Clarkson pottery classes, musical performances, theatresports, busking, pavement art, mask day, Brendan Dooley magic, parades, solo performances and concerts.

The Swimming Exhibition at the Medbury School Swimming Pool yesterday was an opportunity for our Years 1 and 2 boys to showcase their learning and swimming skills to parents, grandparents and friends who joined us at this fun-filled event.

Yesterday we held our Numeracy and Literacy Open Morning and Parent Information Session. Our aim was to showcase the progression of our Numeracy and Literacy programmes throughout the School.
